Professor Livingstone Luboobi, Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, writes in a letter of appointment to Kalwant Ajimal:
” Owing to imperatives of globalisation and the value that internationalisation adds to higher education institutions, Makerere University is increasingly becoming conscious of the importance to integrate internationalisation in her core functions of teaching; research; and knowledge transfer partnerships and networking. Attraction of international staff and students is in some cases dependent on the unique aspects of the University curricula that are not easily attainable elsewhere. Internationalisation of the University in various forms, namely:admission of foreign students, integration of the international perspective in teaching, learning and collaborative researches, joint degree awards; franchising of programmes in foreign countries and setting up branch campuses in other countries is now central to our 10-year strategic plan. This is an equally important front that you should attach value to, in your assignment.
Professor Luboobi goes on to say,” The University is considering undertaking investments comprising of a mix funding sources from endowments, tuition funds, private investors and rental income from acquisitions and leases, during the next ten-year period, with the aim maximising the rate of return on these investments. Funding for these investments shall be include, but not limited to grants, loans, and donations within the confines of the University’s Investment Policy and as shall be acceptable to Council. You will be required to work closely with the Forum to link you to the relevant office to build a team that will help the University realise that goal of attracting financial sustainability.
Finally, Professor Luboobi goes on to say,” Our partnership with MMF should be focused on the above key areas. This underscores the need for you to reach out to investors, development partners, alumni etc”.
